TORRANCE REFINERY BEING SUED FOR NEGLIGENT OPERATIONS AND NUSIANCE

The case against the Torrance Refinery arises out of growing community concern in the South Bay regarding the questionable operations of the Refinery. For years now, both under the operation of the Refinery’s previous owner Exxon and its current owner PBF Energy, the Refinery has been the center of incident after incident that jeopardizes the safety of those who live and work around the Refinery. Illustrative of this jeopardy to the community was the massive explosion that occurred on February 18, 2015, which was caused by known hazardous conditions that Cal/OSHA labeled intentional and willful. THE ACADEMY OF MOTION PICTURES SUED FOR DISABILITY DISCRIMINATION AFTER FIRING EMPLOYEE RECOVERING FROM STAGE 4 CANCER

On January 30, 2017, Matern Law Group filed a lawsuit against the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on behalf of a former employee, Rodolfo Davila, alleging that the Academy engaged in disability discrimination by refusing to accommodate Mr. Davila’s disability and medical condition and wrongfully terminating his employment in violation of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act. After hearing oral argument, on March 25, 2016 the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the district court’s dismissal of Plaintiffs’ claims for breach of the duty of fair representation and various Labor Code violations, including claims under California’s Private Attorneys General Act. MLG WINS CLASS CERTIFICATION IN WAGE ROW WITH PAPER GIANT
