A Source of Strength in the Community

Our commitment to social justice doesn’t end in the courtroom. We humbly advocate for meaningful change wherever underserved populations might need our support – especially in our own neighborhoods.

How We Started

Given their work with some of the most vulnerable populations in the community, members of Matern Law Group had long expressed a strong desire to offer their support in ways that would reach beyond the courtroom. Matthew Matern established the Satyagraha Alliance in 2017 to serve as the firm’s the social responsibility arm, naming it after Gandhi’s policy of social change through nonviolent resistance – or Satyagraha, a term that literally means “holding to the truth.”

As its inaugural event, The Satyagraha Alliance hosted a fundraiser and community discussion forum to raise awareness of issues surrounding the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles. The event featured Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Rick Wartzman, along with the Executive Director of the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission, Wade Trimmer.

Creating the Future We Want to See

In law and in life, our team’s actions are guided by a shared sense of compassion, integrity, and a desire to give back to our community. We demonstrate this commitment in many ways, including hosting public forums to discuss critical social issues and lending support to local charities and service organizations.

Here are a few of the worthy causes the Matern Law Group team has been working with:

The Satyagraha Alliance

The Satyagraha Alliance is the social corporate responsibility arm of Matern Law Group. Established in 2017, the 501(c)(3) organization stems from Gandhi’s vital mission of bringing about needed social change through non-violent means. The Alliance lends support to local organizations and individuals working to alleviate issues related to homelessness, food insecurity, and other causes of inequality that vulnerable populations in our community likely face.

Is It Illegal, or Just Unfair?

Legal cases can be lengthy, complicated, and confusing, but you don’t have to take on the system all by yourself. If you believe someone has violated your individual rights, or the rights of a large group of people in your community, we can help you find the right course of action.
