Matern Law Group Celebrates Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the contributions and achievements of AAPI people in the United States. This year’s theme is “Advancing Leaders Through Collaboration.”

A Brief History of AAPI Heritage Month

AAPI Heritage Month was first celebrated in 1978 when President Jimmy Carter designated the first ten days of May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1990, Congress passed a joint resolution that expanded the observance to a full month.

The month of May was chosen because it commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869, which was built with the labor of thousands of Chinese immigrants.

The Diversity of AAPI People

AAPI Heritage Month - Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage AAPI people are a diverse group with a rich history and culture. They come from over 50 countries and speak over 100 languages. AAPI people are the fastest-growing racial or ethnic group in the United States, and they make up over 6% of the population.

AAPI people have made significant contributions to all aspects of American society, including business, government, education, the arts, and athletics. Some notable AAPI Americans include:

  • Steven Chu, former U.S. Secretary of Energy
  • Andrew Yang, former presidential candidate and entrepreneur

The Challenges Facing AAPI People

Despite their many accomplishments, AAPI people continue to face discrimination and prejudice. In recent years, there has been a surge in hate crimes against AAPI people, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

AAPI people are also more likely to live in poverty and have lower rates of homeownership than white Americans. They are also less likely to be represented in positions of power in business and government.
